Some of you are familiar with the Standard Poodle
Database (SPD), a project
that has generated thousands of dollars for the PCA Foundation, a
501(c)(3)
public charity that funds Poodle health research and other worthy
projects
(though not the SPD). You may not know, however, that I have been an SPD
beta-tester for the past 10 years or so and also wrote some of its User
Guide.
After testing his year's SPD, I can tell you it
looks better than ever. It
now contains over 110,000 records and incorporates data from many of the
public health registries. It is a must-have tool for any SP breeder or
stud
dog owner.
Over the years, MP and TP fanciers have wished
something similar were
available for their varieties. I'm happy to report that this year there
*will* be a mini/toy version -- the TMPD -- available, again with all
proceeds donated to the Foundation. The TMPD contains over 88,000
records.
Like the SPD, it is updatable, allowing the user to add information --
including health information -- to existing records, to add new dogs,
and to
"try out" contemplated breedings.
The most exciting innovation in both versions of
the database is that they
now contain pre-calculated 10-generation and 15-generation inbreeding
coefficients (COIs).
The SPD software application is the creation of
Lynn Brucker. In earlier
years, Lynn also personally added all the dog records to the SPD. In the
last year or two, however, she has been assisted in this effort by Nancy
Clifton, who has put in hundreds of hours of volunteer time. The TMPD
software is also Lynn's, but the content was generously donated by Eva
Mitchell.
Both the SPD and the TMPD will be available from
Lynn Brucker in exchange
for a $50 donation to the Foundation. Lynn will be located next to the
Kingleys' catalog table on the Arena floor. Lynn is always happy to
answer
questions about the databases and to demonstrate their features. I can
also
provide information on the DBs and have been known to join Lynn at the
table
and/or to spell her there when she's needed a break.
If you won't be at PCA but would like a copy of
either database, ask a
friend to pick one up for you. If that doesn't work, I should be able to
post ordering information after PCA.
Many, many thanks to Lynn, Eva, Nancy, and the
many contributors of
pedigrees from around the world for their hard work on behalf of
Poodles of
all sizes!

Poodle Registration by the American
Kennel Club
The following information may be of interest to readers
Although the AKC does not permit
parti poodles to be shown in conformation, they can be shown in
obedience and agility trials.
The Poodle is one breed in the
USA; all puppies are registered as a 'Poodle' and when they are
exhibited they can become a 'Toy Poodle Champion', 'Miniature Poodle
Champion' or 'Standard Poodle Champion' depending on which variety they
were exhibited in, which in turn depends on their height at the
shoulder.
Parti poodles are accepted for
registration by the American Kennel Club and the acceptable
colors/markings are detailed below.
